Examus’ Updates in January 2021

Additional pages for identification in Web App, including debug pages

We are often asked how it is possible to identify а user automatically before the exam. A proctoring officer cannot quickly check the identities of thousands of students. To solve this problem, we are developing a mechanism for connecting various exterior face recognition modules. Besides, we have already developed our own recognition module. We will tell you more about this later, when the release is ready, but, for now, in the new Web App you can see the stage “Biometric identification” mentioned several times.

New Web App for the European server. Additional translations into French, Spanish

We’re also continuing to work on interface localization. At the request of our customers from France, French and Spanish translations have been added, with German and Portuguese coming next.

The new scoring model is reasonably sensitive to the violation duration, and not just based on the reported alerts, so now there is a difference between a 1-minute breach and a 10-minute breach.

We continue to improve the AI-based remote proctoring system. While we do not recommend making a decision without an additional review of a ‘suspicious case’ by a proctoring officer, a cyber proctor is becoming more valuable and self-reliant. Currently, it provides more accurate scoring - the probability of cheating has drastically decreased after we began taking into account not only the fact of violation, but also its duration. Our practical experience showed that the accuracy has increased significantly; therefore, the scores are directly sent to the LMS immediately after the exam, without a review by a proctoring officer. We are planning to add new types of violations and their automatic identification. This will raise the cyber proctor to a new level of autonomy, and the participation of a proctoring officer to double-check its work will be required significantly less.

Archives and reports are now displayed with the current user's browser time zone. Changing the base time zone settings for the entire server can be done easily (for example, for displaying in the calendar). Not only Moscow Standard Time (MSK) is available!

This is a small but a very important improvement. At the first stage of our work, the question of time zones was not important: the servers and users were in Moscow. But with the emergence of customers from all over the world and installation of servers not only in Russia, it became obvious that this approach could not be universal, so we started looking for a solution. On the one hand, the local time of the country in which the server is located can be set. On the other, what if the server is used by the people who are in charge of an examination and who live in another hemisphere? As a result, we decided to show the time in the time zone in which the user lives. This, of course, may sometimes confuse the users. We will monitor the situation see if any problems arise.
